Lisa thought she loved Ray. He told her he loved her. But then he started courting another woman and Lisa married Samuel on the rebound. When Ray said he had made a mistake she asked Samuel for an annulment of their marriage which he gave her. When she subsequently discovered Ray was not what he appeared to be she finds herself alone and is determined to take control of her life. Samuel has been accepted as a detective and she applies to become one as well which takes them to New York then on to San Francisco where they are told to take a group of orphans who are to be auctioned off to families who want them. What follows involves danger, intrigue and, most of all, romance as Samuel and Lisa are once again thrown together and as they migrate towards Lone Pine.
