Dire circumstances drove Katherine, who had recently been widowed, to move from New York to San Francisco with her tiny daughter and unborn baby. With very little money and nowhere to stay she is rather desperate. But then she meets Timothy, a young law student who, though he has no idea of the position she is in, befriends her. But she does not want to share her plight with him and pretends that all is well, hoping desperately that the baby will not be born until she can find somewhere to live.
